Manchester to Liverpool. May 29

Manchester to LiverpoolA classic 37mile route, now in its seventh year, the Manchester to Liverpool ride is a delight for both families and more experienced cyclists alike. A mostly traffic free event, the route leaves Salford Quays (between 8.00 and 10.00am to suit, HQ map here), leaving Manchester via Old Trafford and Stretford, where it picks up the Trans-Pennine Trail and even includes a trip down the legendary Penny Lane.

 

Entry fees vary from £8.00 to £15.00 – plus transport options – and is open to riders from the age of 8 (accompanied by an adult). Please Note: Road bikes are unlikely to be suitable for certain sections.

Polocini Kegs and Legs – May 14

kegs and legsThis is something that Cyclo really likes the sound of: a combined Sportive and Beer Festival (with the usual sensible get-out of saying don’t drink and ride of course). Three routes on offer, suitably entitled the Half Pint (38miles), Pint (54miles) and Yard (70miles) which includes a timed “King o’the hill” challenge; prices at 20, 23 and £25 respectively and a well deserved pint can be enjoyed at the annual Oldham RUFC beer festival which follows the ride. On-site camping is included in the sportive entry fee and the day offers route cards, feed stations, electronic timing, mech services, SAG wagon, insurance, changing and shower facilities and motorcycle outriders. Honestly, what more could you ask for!

 

Race HQ is at Oldham RUFC (click here for map) with sign on from 7.00am and start times beginning at 8.30am.

Ups & Downs Sportive – May 1

3 courses on offer here (45/68/98miles) through the ever beautiful Surrey Hills and North Downs with some challenging hills that are, according to the organisers, “rideable if you have a reasonable level of fitness.” Entry is a very reasonable 16, 21 or £25 dependent on course with on the day entry available (as long as things haven’t sold out) with a £3 surcharge. Pretty much everything you could want is included in the price including chip timing, feed stations, mech support, bike wash facilities(!), showers, toilets and an incredibly generous £10-worth of free energy products (whilst stocks last, of course). The Cotswold Spring Classic – April 25

Work off those chocolate egg-cesses (sorry) with this fantastic sportive on Monday April 25. Now in it’s third year The Cotswold Spring Classic offers two routes (100 and 160km) both starting and ending in Cirencester and include chip timing, feed stations, mech support, free parking, changing and shower facilities and inclusive post-race snacks. Entries open until April 21 at £24.50 – but be warned: both routes look set to include some “fun” climbs and places are selling out fast

 

Event HQ is the Cirencester College Fosse Way Campus (map here) which will be open from 7am for pre-event registration; start time is 8am, with riders leaving in groups of 50 at 2 minute intervals. More info and entry details at www.cotswoldspringclassic.co.uk

The Pendle Witches Vintage Velo – April 24

How’s this for something a little different? On Sunday April 24 you can take to the saddle on a vintage or classic bike (new-fangled modern contraptions also welcome though) for a jaunt around Lancashire. Two distances are available: “The Trial” (£12.50) a 53mile circular route featuring challenging climbs previously utilised in the Tour of Britain, and “The Cauldron” (£4.50) a 13mile novice route that still offers up two chewy climbs but has the added attraction of a two mile freewheel downhill.

 

Race HQ for both events is the Craven Heifer Pub, Rawtenstall (map details here). Proceeds go to both Cancer Research and local charity Stepping Stones.

The Meon Valley Riser – April 3

Meon Valley RiserThe Meon Valley serves up some of the most spectacular and, at times, challenging, vistas in the South-East of England and as this new sportive is brought to you courtesy of those fine people that organise the New Forest Rattler (Sunday August 21) this should be a doozey – though certainly not a doddle. Two routes on offer of 46/85miles with challenging climbs including Old Winchester Hill and Stoner Hill, plus what the organisers describe as: “some awesome sweeping downhill sections to raise your average mph!”

 

Race HQ is at Boundary Oak School (map details here) and your £23 on-the-day fee gets you pre-race drinks, feed stations, SAG wagon to pick up the defeated (surely not you), post-race soup and drinks plus a finisher’s medal. 15% of profits goes to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Tour of Flanders Sportive 2011 – April 2

Here’s your chance to ride like the pros just a day before some of the world’s greatest cyclists lake to the roads. The Tour of Flanders (De Ronde van Vlaanderen) is one of the biggest and most spectacular sportive in Belgium and your chance to pit yourself and your bike against a choice of three distances: 70km, 140km or the full race distance from Brugge to Meerbeke of 260km (go on, you know you want to…) For MTB fans there are a choice of four distances: 25, 50, 75 and 100km.

Redbridge RideIt Sportive and Cycle Show – March 19

How’s this for a sportive with a difference? Four ride distances on offer (10, 30, 60 and a proper tough 90miles) – level 2 grading so no threat of big climbs just a rip out and back from the Redbridge Cycling Centre through Hainault and nearby Epping Forest with all the usual support. But wait! There’s plenty more with a full program of events (“country’s biggest demo weekend” it’s claimed) including major bike manufacturer exhibitions, M.A.D. Mountain Bike Stunt Team demos, FixIt! Maintenance sessions, plus an audience Geoff Thomas who overcame leukaemia to ride all twenty-one stages of the Tour de France.
