Meon Valley Riser – March 29, 2015

Meon Valley RiserDescribed as ‘a haven for cycling enthusiasts’ the Meon Valley and its surrounding area serves up some of the most spectacular and, at times, challenging, rides in the South-East of England. It’s also home to the Meon Valley Riser sportive, which offers three lengths of route at 47, 84 and 103miles. Brought to you courtesy of the organisers of the New Forest Rattler (August 16) this should be a doozey – though certainly not a doddle.

Race HQ is at Boundary Oak School (map details here) and your entry fee – £30 for the 84 and 103miler and £27 for the 47miler – gets you breakfast, tea and coffee pre-race, fully stocked feed stations, SAG wagon support and lunch after you’ve completed your ride.

Entries on the day will be subject to availability. For full event details see: cyclofanatic.co.uk

Essex Season Ender – November 9, 2014

Essex Season EnderIf you don’t want to lose form over the winter a late season sportive should be just the ticket and the Essex Season Ender, which takes place on roads that can be thoroughly enjoyed at any time of year, perfectly fits the bill. The event HQ is the prestigious Redbridge Cycling Centre (map here) giving you a stunning view of the City of London while still being surrounded by the peace of the countryside and there is a choice of two routes – 42miles and 72miles – to decide between.

The Essex Season Ender 42miler is a great route for the beginner or someone entering a first sportive; following those on the long route for the first 21miles, then cutting west and re-joining those on the long ride at the feed station at Moreton. The 72miler take riders further out onto the quiet countryside roads of Essex towards picturesque villages such as Doddinghurst, Willingale and Good Easter before heading west towards High Roding – a stunning route with a few rewarding hills that creates more of a challenge for those looking to feel the burn in their legs.

Both of the rides include free energy drinks and snacks, chip timing, emergency and pick-up/sweep support. Entry to the Essex Season Ender is £19 for the 72miles and £16.50 for the 42miler – entry to both on the day, places allowing, is £25. Full details and online entry at sportiveuk.co.uk

National Forest Autumn Challenge – October 5, 2014

National Forest Autumn ChallengeAfter the success of the National Forest sportive in May, this late season finale is back at the riders’ requests. The National Forest Autumn Challenge late season finale is packed with features with the aim of providing an event that guides riders around some of the most picturesque villages and country lanes in Leicestershire.

The National Forest Autumn Challenge HQ is hosted in the brand new Loughborough University stadium (map here) with registration from 8am and start times between 8.30am and 10.30am. Entry fee for all distances is £28 with entries on the day – spaces permitting – at an additional £5.
