Cavendish Moves Skywards?

Mark CavendishWith the opening of the transfer period, which under International Cycling Union (UCI) rules is August 1 to December 31, there has been growing speculation about the future of Mark Cavendish’s position with HTC-Highroad. Cav, of course, won the Green Jersey with the team (the first Brit to do so) at last month’s Tour de France but as his contract with them is due to expire at the end of 2011 there has been growing speculation that the Manx Missile will make the move to rivals Team Sky. Speaking to Jonathan Legard on BBC Radio 5 live, the 26 year old sprinter remained tight-lipped on the subject, refusing to be drawn on an answer as to where his future might rest, but confirming, “I’ve had many, many offers and you have to look at every aspect…you have to look at every option.” When Legard pushed him with, “Do you know but you can’t tell us?” Cavendish responded with a succinct, “Yes.”

Like many other riders, and regardless of which team he settles on, Cavendish will be under exceptional pressure this time next year with the Tour de France scheduled to finish barely days before the London Olympics are due to begin. In two week’s time (August 14) Cavendish will be taking part in the 140km London-Surrey Cycle Classic, a test run of the 2012 road race event.

Preston Front

Preston Elite RaceOne of the most popular town centre circuit cycle races is coming to Preston, Lancashire, on Sunday August 7 as the eagerly anticipated fifth and final round of the thrilling British Cycling Elite Circuit Race Series rolls into town. The free to watch day of action starts at 10am with a series of youth races and a family ride, and with the British Cycling Womens National Circuit Race Championships as a prelude to the Elite riders who take to the course at 1.30pm for the deciding round of this exhilarating series.

The Rapha Condor-Sharp squad has so far dominated the series (with the notable exception of the series opener in Otley which was won by Scott Thwaites of Team Endura), and it looks highly likely that they could take four for five in Preston. The team’s Dean Downing, Dean Windsor and Graham Briggs currently hold the top three positions in the series and Sunday’s final will be the decider for the overall series winner.

Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council, says: “The Grand Prix is a hugely important fixture in Preston’s event and sporting calendar, and it is a delight to welcome world class athletes to the city once again.”

Contador Case Moved. Again…

In June Cyclo reported that the Contador doping hearing had been rescheduled – yet again – from the original pre-Tour de France May date until a now come-and-gone end of June date and then to an August 1 date. Now we hear that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is likely to address issues relating the Spaniard’s alleged illegal use of clenbuterol (similar to the asthma drug salbutamol and gives advantageous aerobic capacity) during the 2010 Tour de France not before November. The decision comes partly as a result of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) asking for more time to compile evidence and “resolve arguments about scientific issues.” A statement on the CAS website reports: “As a consequence of the parties’ request, the hearing which was scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 August 2011 is cancelled and will be rescheduled for new dates, probably in November 2011.”

Since testing positive for the banned substance during the 2010 Tour Contador has remained adamant that he accidentally ingested the performance enhancer via contaminated meat. He was initially cleared by The Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) before that decision was challenged by the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The shadow of doubt continues to hover over the Saxo Bank-SunGard star but the sport as a whole…

Hell on Two Wheels

HellRiderEver looked at those crazy two-legged fools tackling one of the growing number of HellRunner events (trudging up the “Hills of Hell” and through the “Bog of Doom”) and thought, “If only I could do that! But on a bike…” Well now’s your chance with entries already open for the 2012 HellRider (Saturday, June 2). Comprising separate 5km run and 8km+ MTB loops, your team of three or five (or for the particularly insane, solo entries) have eight 8hours to complete as many laps as possible, with rules stating that each team member must complete at least one run/ride during the event and only one team member can be in action at any one time.

Organisers describe it as, “An eight-hour team duathlon of devilish proportions! Get your friends, mates and colleagues together and tackle ‘The Devil’s Passage’. Seek penitence as you are punished by the soul-sapping ‘Teeth of Cerberus’ and have your senses awoken by the Bath of Beelzebub!” Sound like fun? Cyclo certainly tempted – entry costs £40.00 per person (with free HellRider Tech-T thrown in). For more information and entry details visit: www.hellrider.co.uk

Briggs wins in Beverly

Graham Briggs completed Rapha Condor Sharp’s dream criterium season yesterday (Friday July 29) with a hugely popular win in the National Criterium Championships in Beverly, East Yorkshire. The race took place over a 1.25km circuit thorough the market town’s centre, lasting one hour ten minutes plus five laps. Briggs was rightly in jubilant mood, not only celebrating what is arguably the biggest win of his career, sprinting to victory ahead of a seven-man break that had dominated much of the evenings action, but also because the win came just two days after he returned from his honeymoon. Speaking after the race Briggs said, “I am delighted to win this one. I’ve just got back from my Honeymoon in France, so I knew I was well rested, but it took me a while to come round.”

Briggs will be wearing his new white, red and blue jersey for the first time at the Preston Grand Prix on Sunday August 7, while the rest of the Rapha Condor Sharp team will continue their Premier Calendar campaign at the East Yorkshire Classic tomorrow (Sunday, August 1).

Boris Bikes’ Birthday

With the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in London celebrating its first birthday (happy birthday from Cyclo) the Mayor, Boris Johnson, has announced the sponsor’s additional £25million pledge to expand the massively successful initiative westwards. Speaking at celebrations in the Westfield’s shopping centre – who will themselves part fund new docking stations at the complex – Johnson announced plans to bring the scheme (most commonly and fittingly known as Boris Bikes) to Wandworth, Hammersmith, Lambeth and Kensington and Chelsea; all of which is expected to be complete by 2013. Meanwhile expansion east is also under way with additions through Shoreditch and Tower Hamlets and on to Canary Wharf with 8,000 new bikes and 14,400 docking stations which should all be in place in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.

It’s estimated that in the 12months since the schemes initial launch that some 6million bike journeys have been made – a testament to its success and popularity. Johnson commented on the anniversary, “By working together we are putting thousands more Londoners on two wheels”, whilst Bob Diamond, Barclays Chief Executive described the scheme as “pioneering” and one that, “makes a positive difference to everyday life in London, its people and its economy.”

Reade Passes on World Champion

BMX World Championships 2011It has been announced that BMX World Champion Shanaze Reade will not defend her title at the upcoming championships in Copenhagen due to start tomorrow and running through to July 31. The 22 year old triple world champ is recuperating from a wrist injury and is hoping to recover fully in time for the 2012 Olympic BMX trials in Stratford (August 19 & 20.) “It was a tough choice to make as obviously I wanted to go out there and defend my world title. (But) preparing for the test event is the priority for my Olympic ambitions and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardise being ready for that,” said Reade.

In addition to BMX Reade is also hoping to take a place in the Team GB Track squad – she previously won Gold in both 2007 and 2008 with Victoria Pendleton in the team sprint discipline.

Evans Takes le Tour?

It’s all over bar the shouting at the Tour de France with BMC’s Cadel Evans looking certain to be crowned king of the event at tomorrow’s Champs-Élysées finish in Paris – making him the first Australian ever to take the prestigious title. The 34 year old rider completed the rather hilly 42.5km Grenoble-Grenoble Individual Time Trial seven seconds down on the Stage 20 winner Tony Martin of HTC-Highroad (55min 34s) but an all-important 2min 30s faster than the overnight Yellow Jersey (and potential Tour champ) Andy Schleck. Reigning champion Alberto Contador of Saxo Bank took third place on the ITT, but it was too little, too late for the trouble Spanish rider who seems to have struggled at almost every stage of this year’s Tour.

Evans – who has taken second place in the event in both 2007 and 2008 – was wearing his 2009 World Champion shoes for this penultimate stage and commented after the finish: “I get an incredible amount of support and encouragement (from Australia) and to be able to fly the flag over this side of the world is incredible. Twenty years I’ve been cycling and there are some really great people who have believed in me all this time.”
