Lotto Belisol: Behind the Scenes

There’s far more to a successful team at the Tour de France than just a squad of outstanding riders – mechanics, soigneurs, chefs; without those behind the scenes the modern team simply couldn’t function. Thanks to our friends at RoadCycling UK, we’re delighted to bring you another of their gorgeous in-graphics, this one looking at the inner workings of Andre Greipel’s Lotto Belisol team.

Tour of Turkey Domino Crash

Aidis Krupis Tour of Turkey Big races are never without their danger, but yesterday’s crash on Stage Two of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey was one of the most spectacular Cyclo has ever seen. With just 500m left on the 153km route from Alanya to Antalya the peloton was beginning to split for final sprint position when Mark Renshaw (Blanco) clipped wheels and caused a domino spill that saw the majority of likely candidates for victory hit the tarmac. Only the lucky few ahead of Renshaw escaped the carnage, including Aidis Kruopis of Orica-GreenEdge who scraped a fortuitous win as a result of the accident. Clearly aware that luck runs both ways, Kruopis commented post-race: ‘I feel very good to have won today… I had a bit of bad luck with Qatar and Langkawi. I was looking for a victory at both of those races and came up empty. It was especially nice to take the victory today after that.’

André Greipel – third in yesterday’s calamitous stage – goes into today’s 153.5km stage from Antalya to Elmali in overall lead.

André Greipel Wins Tour Med Opener

André Greipel wins Tour Med Stage 1Lotto-Belisol’s André Greipel has won the opening stage of the Tour Méditerranéen, a 146.5km of flat, but windy, racing from Limoux to Gruissan. Already showing strong form this season after three stage wins at the Santos Tour Down Under, Greipel clinched yesterday’s victory in a bunch sprint finish that saw IAM Cycling’s Matteo Pelucchi forced to settle for second and Sojasun’s Maxime Daniel third.

Greipel commented on his opening day’s success, saying, ‘Today Olivier Kaisen and Gert Dockx deserve a special mention. They rode on the head of the peloton all day long… For most of the stage we had a backwind, so the cold wasn’t that bad. Because the time gaps weren’t passed on quite as well, it wasn’t easy to have an idea of the size of the gap. The preparation of the sprint was a bit difficult, because the signalization (sic) wasn’t clear, but luckily I could finish the team’s work.’

With considerably less luck than Greipel was Team Saxo-Tinkoff‘s Andy Schleck out of the race after abandoning Stage 1 with an infection of the respiratory tract – he will not continue with the remainder of the tour. After abandoning Schleck explained: ‘This morning I already had breathing problems. Instead of getting better, it just got worse during the race because of the cold and the wind. I didn’t want to abandon out of respect for the fans and the organisation, but also because I need this competition. After the Tour Down Under I felt I was in a good way and I was really looking forward to this race. I am now sicker than I was before. I need to let my body recover and I hope I can resume training as soon as possible. In theory my race program will not change.’

Andy Schleck is expected to resume competition in the Tour du Haut-Var (February 16-17).

Greipel Makes it Two for Two

Yesterday (June 5) saw Lotto’s Andre Greipel power home to his second Tour de France stage victory in a row across the 196.5km route from Rouen to Saint-Quentin in a time of 4 hours 41’30”, keeping Matt Goss in second and Juan Jose Haedo in third. In an exhilarating sprint finish – which Greipel described as ‘one of the most difficult sprints ever’ – Sky’s Mark Cavendish was outclassed to finish in fifth and was lucky to escape a repeat of Wednesday’s wipe-out when a late crash, which appeared to have been caused by Garmin-Sharp’s Tyler Farrar making a sudden change of direction, saw a number of contenders taken out. Amongst those injured were Katusha’s Belarusian rider Aliaksandr Kuchynski who suffered a fracture to the scaphoid bone of his right hand – he is however expected to continue riding today.

With Bradley Wiggins finishing safely in 18th to maintain his overall second place, Sean Yates, Team Sky Sports Director, clearly remains upbeat, commenting: ‘The final didn’t work out quite how we wanted it but the guys were all there and they did a good job. We upped the ante and next time it will be better. Cav dropped back a bit at the finish and had a bit too much work to do at the end… We need to keep this going starting tomorrow and we will look to keep Bradley safe and set Mark up heading into the finish.’

The action continues today (207.5km Epernay to Metz) with RadioShack’s Fabian Cancellara remaining top of the overalls with a time of 24hours 45’32”
