Omega Pharma-QuickStep: More Signings to Come?

OPQ_jerseyThe worst kept secret in professional cycling was officially confirmed last week when Omega Pharma-Quickstep boss Patrick Lefevere announced the signing of Rigoberto Uran. In addition to Uran, who joins from Sky, Lefevere also confirmed the signing of Mark Renshaw from Belkin and Alessandro Petacchi. Uran is expected to be the squad leader and the main contender for Grand Tour success over the next two years of his contract.

Add those three to Tom Boonen, Sylvain Chavanel, Tony Martin and Mark Cavendish and you have one of the strongest and most versatile squads in pro cycling. But apparently Lefevere says he may add even more. ‘It depends on the moves in the market. Some people I have to speak to still as there are four or five riders in my team who are at the end of their contracts. There’s Euskaltel stopping and so there are a few riders who’ve done well in the mountains before and I’m interested in. But I’m not in a hurry.’ Sammy Sanchez maybe?

OPQ have historically been a good team but never had a contender for the top prizes. So why the sudden change of approach? Lefevre’s explanation is that he’s been put off signing a grand tour contender until now due to cycling’s doping problems.

Well, now he’s got one in Uran, who finished second in the Giro d’Italia this year, despite losing time while supporting a fading Wiggins. As the ever quotable Lefevere said: ‘What’s for sure is that I’m not standing there with a gun in his face telling him he has to get on the podium in the Giro, Tour or Vuelta. If he does it though, of course I’ll be happy.’

Tour of Turkey Domino Crash

Aidis Krupis Tour of Turkey Big races are never without their danger, but yesterday’s crash on Stage Two of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey was one of the most spectacular Cyclo has ever seen. With just 500m left on the 153km route from Alanya to Antalya the peloton was beginning to split for final sprint position when Mark Renshaw (Blanco) clipped wheels and caused a domino spill that saw the majority of likely candidates for victory hit the tarmac. Only the lucky few ahead of Renshaw escaped the carnage, including Aidis Kruopis of Orica-GreenEdge who scraped a fortuitous win as a result of the accident. Clearly aware that luck runs both ways, Kruopis commented post-race: ‘I feel very good to have won today… I had a bit of bad luck with Qatar and Langkawi. I was looking for a victory at both of those races and came up empty. It was especially nice to take the victory today after that.’

André Greipel – third in yesterday’s calamitous stage – goes into today’s 153.5km stage from Antalya to Elmali in overall lead.

Cavendish Takes ToB Stage 1

Tour of BritainThe Tour of Britain got off to a blistering start yesterday (Sunday, September 11) for Mark Cavendish who sprinted to Stage 1 victory in Whitesands, Dumfries in a time of 4:41:06. Cav’s participation had been in doubt until early last week as he had quit the Vuelta a España on Stage 4 and UCI rules normally dictate that riders who withdraw from a race are ineligible to compete in another whilst the first is still running. However, having been granted special dispensation by the governing nosy to compete in the ToB, Cavendish grabbed the bulls by the horn and stormed his way to success with an early four second lead on overall classification thanks to both the win and the stage’s time bonus. His HTC Highroad team mate Mark Renshaw took second place on the 170km stage with Theo Bos of Rabobank in third.

Quoted on the ToB’s official website (www.tourofbritain.com), Cavendish said, “It’s incredible to win the first stage and get the leaders jersey…We had wicked support today. The amount of cheers and banners along the stage was brilliant. Super encouraging. You wouldn’t expect this is Britain and it’s very different to when I last raced here in 2007. It’s very nice. This event is certainly growing.”
