Rapha Condor Minus Sharp

Sharp end sponsorship Rapha CondorThe end of the 2012 season is set to mark the parting of ways between Rapha Condor and Sharp as sponsors of the British UCI Continental team. Rapha Condor will continue to sponsor the UK based outfit whilst Sharp who initially backed the team in 2009 under the ‘Sharp4Prostate’ charity banner, and shifted up a gear as a title sponsor for the 2010 season will concentrate efforts on support of the Garmin-Sharp team at World Tour level.

Paul Hide, Managing Director of Sharp in the UK commented: Our sponsorship of Rapha Condor Sharp has allowed us to put the Sharp brand in front of the kind of tech-savvy, design-conscious audience we want to engage with. Rapha and Condor have been the ideal partners to guide us in the sport, and we wish them every success in continuing their project to develop young talent. Sharps support of pro-cycling has now moved to UCI World Tour with Garmin Sharp. Like Rapha Condor, this is a team with an unwavering commitment to the best elements of cycling.

Simon Mottram, Rapha’s CEO, added: Sharp’s support over the last three and a half years helped us to develop a successful team and to reach the pinnacle of British domestic racing. We have really enjoyed working with them and although it is sad to part ways, seeing a multi-national company move up to supporting cycling at World Tour level is a very positive step for the sport and very satisfying.

Podiums and Plasters for RCS

One of the biggest single-day races on the UK calendar, the Lincoln Grand Prix which sees teams battle it out over 13 laps of the 8 mile circuit, held mixed fortunes for Rapha Condor Sharp yesterday (Sunday, May 13). Team captain Kristian House managed an excellent third place behind Marcin Bialoblocki (NODE4) in second and winner Russell Downing of Endura Racing, but two of his team mates ended the race in hospital. Worst off was Mike Cuming, who had recently shown great form at the Tour of Korea, suffering a broken elbow in a hard crash; whilst Luke Mellor spent the night in Lincoln hospital with severe cuts following his fall. Lucky to avoid needing hospitalisation was a third RCS rider Felix English, who wiped out trying to chase his way back from a puncture.

Despite the setbacks Rapha Condor Sharp will still see action on two fronts this week as the Halfords Tour Series gets underway in Scotland on Tuesday (May 15) and the 60th An Post RAS begins on May 20 in Dunboyn; Cuming will be forced to miss the RAS start and Mellors involvement has been described as doubtful.

RCS Confirms 2012 Squad

Rapha Condor Sharp continue to make good on their promise of promoting and shaping new talent during the 2012 season with the announcement of two additional signings: Felix English and Mike Cuming. Although the squad has dominated the domestic scene for several years (and may well continue to do so), they now see their focus on the development of new British talent”, citing English and Cuming as perfect examples for this new mix.

John Herety, Directeur Sportif, commented that: These two riders will be great additions to the team. Felix English has already had a brief moment in the spotlight when turned heads by beating Sir Chris Hoy in the European Track Champs last year. He was only 18 at the time and for a rider who doesnt consider himself a pure sprinter it was an amazing scalp.Michael Cuming is another young rider we have identified as a talent. He was brought to our attention by Jon Tiernan-Locke who noticed Cuming during the last few Premier Calendars before the Tour of Britain, while JT was in pretty much the form of his life, Cummings was the only rider who could stay anywhere near him on the climbs.

With the addition of these final two signings, the complete rider roster rises to 14 riders (one more than the 2011 season) with the confirmed line up for 2012 now set as: Ed Clancy, Mike Cummings, Dean Downing, Felix English, Ben Grenda, Richard Handley, Kristian House, Christopher Jennings, Tim Kennaugh, Richard Lang, James McCallum, Luke Mellor, Oliver Rossi and Andy Tennant.

Rapha Condor Sharp Take the Initiative

rapha condor sharpFollowing a renewed sponsorship deal between title sponsors, Rapha Condor and Sharp the no.1 ranked British Continental team has announced that it intends to build on its most successful season since its 2006 inception. In 2012, the all-important Olympic year, the team will retain Olympic team members Andrew Tennant and Ed Clancy MBE, Gold Medallist at the Beijing Games. The team will also continue to gain experience from former National Champion Kristian House, as well as the longest serving member of the team Dean Downing. Perhaps more intriguingly there is to be a new commitment to training a new generation of cycling stars.

Commenting on the teams young development plan, Simon Mottram, CEO of Rapha, says: We all hope that a new generation of fans are being drawn to cycle racing and, among them will be hundreds if not thousands of young hopefuls, keen to try out racing and emulate their new heroes. And yet, these promising juniors and espoirs have very few opportunities or openings to get into the sport and move up through the ranks. For all the professional teams competing for TV airtime and UK professional race victories, few structured programs exist to develop and nurture British racing talent. The British cycling academy only has spaces for the best eight young riders each year. There are no programs in this country to rival the proven systems such as those run by Rabobank or AN-PostStarting in 2012 Rapha Condor Sharp aims to fill that gap with its own development program and, ultimately, a cycle racing academy.

Cyclo will bring you more details as they unfold.

Wind Stops Play

In an almost unprecedented move Stage Two of the Tour of Britain was cancelled today (Monday, September 12) due to the high winds sweeping in from the tail end of Hurricane Erin. With many of the team support vehicles and motorcycle outriders voicing their concern about safety after making their way to the start in Kendal and after lengthy discussions, including consultation with organisers already at the planned stage end in Blackpool, the decision to cancel was made the first time that a major UK race has been pulled since a stage of the Mile Race twenty-five years ago.

Rapha Condor Sharps Andy Tennant commented: It feels very strange, its like getting a day off school when you arent sick. Its a real shame for the race and all the fans who would have come down to Blackpool to see us, but its just not safe to race in these conditions. I would think twice about training today, but even then you can choose your routes, but here we are a hundred riders, with motorcycle outriders, and team cars. Its certainly the right decision for the riders.

Assuming conditions improve the ToB will recommence tomorrow with Stage Threes 140km Stoke-on-Trent leg.

Tennant’s Super Win

Andy Tennant has taken his first big win for Rapha Condor Sharp at the Richmond Grand Prix – the final round and one of the most demanding courses of the Premier Calendar series. Despite recent illness, which had ruled him out of the recent team training camps, he out-classed and outmanoeuvred the field in the final 700 meters to take the win. Speaking after the event Tennant commented: I am made up to win here. We did a race in France just after (my illness) and I really suffered, but winning here proves it was worth it…In the final few kilometres, the bunch was getting close, and Marcin started to sit on. I was forced to lead out but when Richardson went early he gave me the springboard I needed. Its not a straightforward finish and I committed to my effort 100%. I thought if they come round me then so be it, but I just gave it everything.

Team manager John Herety added We dominated the Prems last year with Chris (Newton) and this year while we had an eye on the overall, the focus was for individual rounds this way it worked out that we came away with different riders winning on different days, instead of having to defend for one rider. This gives me satisfaction as I can see the strength in depth that we have in our team.

The Richmond Grand Prix marked the teams final race before the focus switches to the Tour of Britain.

Preston Front

Preston Elite RaceOne of the most popular town centre circuit cycle races is coming to Preston, Lancashire, on Sunday August 7 as the eagerly anticipated fifth and final round of the thrilling British Cycling Elite Circuit Race Series rolls into town. The free to watch day of action starts at 10am with a series of youth races and a family ride, and with the British Cycling Womens National Circuit Race Championships as a prelude to the Elite riders who take to the course at 1.30pm for the deciding round of this exhilarating series.

The Rapha Condor-Sharp squad has so far dominated the series (with the notable exception of the series opener in Otley which was won by Scott Thwaites of Team Endura), and it looks highly likely that they could take four for five in Preston. The teams Dean Downing, Dean Windsor and Graham Briggs currently hold the top three positions in the series and Sundays final will be the decider for the overall series winner.

Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council, says: The Grand Prix is a hugely important fixture in Prestons event and sporting calendar, and it is a delight to welcome world class athletes to the city once again.

Briggs wins in Beverly

Graham Briggs completed Rapha Condor Sharps dream criterium season yesterday (Friday July 29) with a hugely popular win in the National Criterium Championships in Beverly, East Yorkshire. The race took place over a 1.25km circuit thorough the market towns centre, lasting one hour ten minutes plus five laps. Briggs was rightly in jubilant mood, not only celebrating what is arguably the biggest win of his career, sprinting to victory ahead of a seven-man break that had dominated much of the evenings action, but also because the win came just two days after he returned from his honeymoon. Speaking after the race Briggs said, “I am delighted to win this one. Ive just got back from my Honeymoon in France, so I knew I was well rested, but it took me a while to come round.

Briggs will be wearing his new white, red and blue jersey for the first time at the Preston Grand Prix on Sunday August 7, while the rest of the Rapha Condor Sharp team will continue their Premier Calendar campaign at the East Yorkshire Classic tomorrow (Sunday, August 1).
