Action Medical Research London to Paris – July 23-27, 2014

Action Medical Research London to ParisFour incredible options in aid of the fantastic Action Medical Research that offers something for everyone when it comes to tackling the famous London to Paris ride. The ‘Cool’ option spreads the ride London-Calais-Abbeville-Beauvais-Paris and is aimed at those new to such cycle challenges with four days of cycling (80miles, 71miles, 62miles and 48miles), whilst the ‘Classic’ (London-Calais-Arras-Compiègne-Paris) ups the daily mileage to 85, 75, 75 and 61miles and the ‘Champion’ (Chessington-St Malo-Mayenne-Chartres-Paris) takes things further with 76, 81, 114 and 52mile stages. If none of that sounds tough enough (!) there is also a 24hour option to tackle a massive 240miles of road.

Registration for the multiday options is £70, with a commitment to raising £1,500 for Action Medical Research – supporting sick and disabled children – which includes a massive amount of support (plus food and accommodation), whilst the 24hour challenge costs the same for registration but with a lower, £1,200, fundraising commitment. Whichever one you decide to test your legs on there is an opportunity to see the closing stage of the 2014 Tour de France on the famous Champs-Élysées…

Note also that Action Medical Research is running another London to Paris event September 10-14 – although this one naturally doesn’t include seeing the TdF…

The Shelter Cymru Challenge – February 5

Shelter Cymru Challenge Here’s something you don’t see every day – an event that combines cycling and rugby. But clear your minds of some insane two-wheeled scrum, The Shelter Cymru Challenge is four days of cycling designed to get you from the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, to the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, in time to take your seat for the start of the RBS 6 Nations. The longest day is a ‘doable’ 65miles, the shortest around 35miles, but even if the weather proves challenging there’s a distraction in the shape of former Wales Captain and British Lions forward Colin Charvis who will be leading the way (or at least riding along…)

Each rider is asked to raise a minimum of £1,200 in sponsorship for Shelter and in return (apart from a great deal of satisfaction and some aching legs) participants get a ticket to the match, advice and training schedules prior to departure, a pre-ride training day, ferry crossing to Ireland, all accommodation + breakfast and specifically prepared meals throughout the day, all energy drinks whilst riding, return transport to Cardiff and a commemorative shirt…

Go on, you know you want to. Full details of the Shelter Cymru Challenge at sheltercymruchallenge.org.uk

The Tiffin Wheeler – September 15

The Tiffin WheelerOrganised by 2Boats Events, The Tiffin Wheeler is Surrey’s newest sportive offering three great routes to choose from with a mixture of undulating hills, flat scenic roads and pretty villages. All three options – the 25mile ‘Fun’, 60mile ‘Standard’, 90mile ‘Epic– set off from Tiffin Boys School  (map here), with the two longer rides delivering the extra challenge of Surrey’s famous ‘Olympic hills.’

The organisers are particularly focused on getting more young people (and women of all ages) involved in sportives and say they believe that the 25mile Fun option is, ‘a great way for all the family to enjoy cycling’; it’s an easy route on quiet roads round Hersham and Walton on Thames finishing via the famous Bushy Park and heading back to Kingston.  The route ensures a fun relaxed introduction to cycling with enough challenge to get your leg working adequately whilst enjoying the scenery.

Registration on the day opens at 8am, the start staggered in small groups with ‘Epic’ participants the first away. Entry fees are £20 for the Fun option and £25 for both the Standard and Epic – entries will be available on the day (space permitting) but at an additional £5 premium. The event will be used to raise funds for TIPRA (Tiffin Parent Rugby Association; for further details on the The Tiffin Wheeler see 2boats.org
