When Cervélo launched the R5ca frameset back in 2010 it set the benchmark for lightweight performance. Now, raising the bar even higher, comes the Cervélo Rca, making the seemingly lightest even lighter while maintaining optimal stiffness and incorporating the new Squoval 3tube shapes, which draw on aerodynamic lessons learned with the category-leading Cervélo S-series.
Using what Cervélo call their Concurrent Aero & Structural Engineering (CASE) approach, they brought their Toronto and California teams together in a cross-disciplinary process with the goal to maximise the structural and aerodynamic performance of the final design. Utilizing in-house F1 engineering design tools Cervélo was able to ‘virtually’ test all aspects of frame performance. The resulting frameset weighs 667g (for a 54cm frame with paint and small parts) which Cervelo say has a stiffness equivalent to the R5ca and has aerodynamic savings of 7.4watts over the current R-series and up to 10.2watts less drag than typical road bikes.
Commenting on the launch, Phil White, co-founder and chairman, said: ‘The Rca showcases the best of Cervélo’s knowledge, testing, and industry-leading engineering processes… We are always proud to introduce a new Cervélo, but given its no-holds barred, best-of-the-best nature, launching a new Project California bike is particularly special. The new Rca further solidifies our leadership in innovating faster, stiffer, lighter, and stronger bikes.’
The Cervélo Rca frameset is available now for RRP US$10,000 (£6,600) in a limited edition run of 325. Further information at cervelo.com or take a look at the video if you are still undecided about parting with the best part of £7k…
