British cycling star and Olympic hopeful Lizzie Armitstead has confirmed her intensions of passing up the Omnium event at the 2012 Games and instead concentrating her efforts on the Road Race. The 22 year old 2011 National Road Race Champion – who also placed 7th in the World Women’s Road Race Championship in Copenhagen this year – has admitted that entry into the multi-discipline event (which makes its Olympic debut in London) would involve a level of commitment that could undermine her chances on the 140km road race. Explaining her decision Armitstead commented, “To ride the Omnium you have be part of the Team Pursuit squad and to do that I would realistically have to give up on the road. In an ideal world it would be different and the decision was difficult but the Road Race it what I’m really passionate about.” Either Laura Trott or Dani King are likely to take her place in the Team GB Omnium squad.
