Wind Stops Play

In an almost unprecedented move Stage Two of the Tour of Britain was cancelled today (Monday, September 12) due to the high winds sweeping in from the tail end of Hurricane Erin. With many of the team support vehicles and motorcycle outriders voicing their concern about safety after making their way to the start in Kendal and after lengthy discussions, including consultation with organisers already at the planned stage end in Blackpool, the decision to cancel was made – the first time that a major UK race has been pulled since a stage of the Mile Race twenty-five years ago.

Rapha Condor Sharp’s Andy Tennant commented: “It feels very strange, it’s like getting a day off school when you aren’t sick. It’s a real shame for the race and all the fans who would have come down to Blackpool to see us, but it’s just not safe to race in these conditions. I would think twice about training today, but even then you can choose your routes, but here we are a hundred riders, with motorcycle outriders, and team cars. It’s certainly the right decision for the riders”.

Assuming conditions improve the ToB will recommence tomorrow with Stage Three’s 140km Stoke-on-Trent leg.

Cavendish Takes ToB Stage 1

Tour of BritainThe Tour of Britain got off to a blistering start yesterday (Sunday, September 11) for Mark Cavendish who sprinted to Stage 1 victory in Whitesands, Dumfries in a time of 4:41:06. Cav’s participation had been in doubt until early last week as he had quit the Vuelta a España on Stage 4 and UCI rules normally dictate that riders who withdraw from a race are ineligible to compete in another whilst the first is still running. However, having been granted special dispensation by the governing nosy to compete in the ToB, Cavendish grabbed the bulls by the horn and stormed his way to success with an early four second lead on overall classification thanks to both the win and the stage’s time bonus. His HTC Highroad team mate Mark Renshaw took second place on the 170km stage with Theo Bos of Rabobank in third.

Quoted on the ToB’s official website (www.tourofbritain.com), Cavendish said, “It’s incredible to win the first stage and get the leaders jersey…We had wicked support today. The amount of cheers and banners along the stage was brilliant. Super encouraging. You wouldn’t expect this is Britain and it’s very different to when I last raced here in 2007. It’s very nice. This event is certainly growing.”

Cobo Crowned at Vuelta

vuelta a espaniaAnd so the 2011 Vuelta a España ends; and whilst the Madrid final didn’t deliver an ultimate overall British winner it was the scene of a spectacular UK two, three podium finish for Sky’s Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins respectively, one of the finest results for a grand tour in living memory and the first time a Brit has been on the podium since Robert Millar (second in 1986). It was, of course, Spain’s Juan Jose Cobo of Geox-TMC that rode for crowning glory with a total time of 84:59:31 – with Froome on +13seconds and Wiggins + 1minute, 39seconds.

With the final stage in the country’s capital a parade lap in all but name, the unofficial rule dictates no attack on the race leader meaning Cobo’s victory was all but guaranteed by the end of the penultimate Stage 20 (185km Bilbao to Vitoria) which was won by Leopard Trek’s Italian sprint specialist Daniele Bennati. Although in theory, with a time bonus 32 seconds up for grabs, Froome could still have snatched victory, it was not to be. The final standings marked the first major tour victory of Cobo’s career.

Get Cobble Wobbled

The Cobble WobbleThe Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France, the Vuelta a España. The greatest cycling spectacles on the planet? Well maybe, but only if you’ve never been to Frome and witnessed first-hand the blood, sweat and tears that is…The Cobble Wobble. The annual event, held against the backdrop of 17th century buildings and chocolate box village life, is an individually timed bicycle hillclimb sprint up the bone-judderingly cobbled Catherine Hill – a total of 179 yards – which sees riders from near and far (mostly near, it must be said) battling it out for the title “King of the Cobbles”. Various categories give a fair crack to all age ranges, with the top 20 riders from the day’s action moving forward to go head-to-head in the “Charge Bikes King of the Cobbles” final.

Organisers point out that “it’s not all about being fast” (although Cyclo would like to counter-point that it is if you want to win…) and encourage a whole lot of dressing up of both riders and bikes. Take a look at just how deadly serious things get with the video below. Unfortunately things are fully booked for 2011 but just the joy of watching should be enough to make the trip worthwhile and there’s always 2012 – what could be finer than being crowned “King of the Cobbles” in an Olympic Year?

Froome for Vuelta Champ?

Chris FroomeCould Britain be in line for its first ever Vuelta a Espana win? Certainly the prospect took a step in the right direction yesterday (Wednesday, September 7) when Team Sky’s Chris Froome unleashed a blistering attack to steal a win on Stage 17 – the 211km leg, Faustino V to Peña Cabarga – from Juan Jose Cobo of Geox. Although the Spanish rider retained the overall leader’s red jersey, Froome’s win across a thrilling head to head hill climb finish took 9 seconds off Cobo’s lead with a combination of the 1 second win and the stage’s awarded time bonus. The victory marked the first time in more than two decades that a Brit has won a mountain finish in a major race; the last to do so was Robert Millar in the 1989 Tour de France.

With fours stages still to run on the Vuelta before riders reach the final in the country’s capital Madrid on Sunday (September 11) things can, naturally, still change dramatically, but with Froome sitting pretty in second place on the overall standings and his Sky team mate Bradley Wiggins still in third Cyclo has their collective fingers crossed for a patriotic podium.

Yorkshire’s TdF Bid

Back in May Cyclo reported that “advanced talks” had apparently taken place between the organisers of the Tour de France and the regional tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire about the possibility of holding the 2016 Grand Depart (the opening 2 days/stages) in the county. At the time Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, commented: “…in-depth discussions are ongoing but I can reveal Yorkshire’s bid has been positively received by the organising committee at this stage.”

Now though it seems that a spanner may be in the works as cyclists have threatened to take Sheffield city council to court for failing to repair potholes on a section likely to be considered for Le Tour’s first UK visit since Kent in 2007. The section, known as “the Strines”, links the A616 with the A57 at Ladybower, and has previously featured in the Tour of Britain. The possible action against the council is being brought by Martyn Bolt, a trustee of The Cyclists’ Defence Fund (CDF), who is using a little known part of the Highways Act to either force repairs or have the council face the courts.
