Daryl Impey Tests Positive for Probenecid

daryl_impeyORICA GreenEDGE rider Daryl Impey, who last year became the first South African to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey, has confirmed that he has failed a drugs test. The 29-year-old said on his personal website that he had been notified by William Newman, the President of Cycling South Africa, on June 23 that he had tested positive for the banned substance Probenecid at the South African championships held back in February. Probenecid, a diuretic, is considered a masking agent, used to hide the presence of other performance enhancing drugs.

Impey said in his statement: ‘I had no knowledge of Probenecid nor have I ever taken the substance knowingly in any manner.  I am committed to drug-free sport and fully intend to take all steps necessary to clear myself of any suspicion. The notification came as a complete shock to me just days before the start of the Tour de France, particularly since anti-doping tests conducted on me on 8 and 9 February 2014 yielded no adverse results. I immediately flew back to South Africa and was present at the analysis of my B sample on 27 June 2014, the results of which confirmed the initial analysis.’

An announcement from ORICA-GreenEDGE in relation to Impey’s situation reads: ‘The team would like to underline that it respects Daryl Impey’s right to prove his full innocence and will not comment any further until the process has run its due course and final conclusion has been made. As per the team’s code of conduct, Daryl Impey will not feature on the team’s roster until the case has been closed and he is fully eligible to ride.’

Simon Gerrans Record Down Under

tour_down_under_2014_ogeAustralia’s Simon Gerrans has won a record third Tour Down Under, beating fellow countryman Cadel Evans by a mere one second at the traditional UCI WorldTour season-opener; a victory made all the more sweet for having taken place on Australia Day and whilst riding for Australian team Orica GreenEDGE.

Gerrans had gained his overall one second lead the previous day and finished in Adelaide on the same time as André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol), who beat Mark Renshaw (Belkin) and Andrew Fenn (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) in the Stage Six sprint. Commenting on his historic victory Gerrans said, ‘The guys did a fantastic job, they kept me right at the front and out of trouble, so it worked out beautifully. It’s a huge honour to win the Tour Down Under. For it to be on Australia Day and racing for an Australia team, it just doesn’t get much better… I guess today’s win is a combination of relief and excitement.’

Clarke Extends with ORICA-GreenEDGE

Simon Clarke ORICA-GreenEDGE ORICA-GreenEDGE has announced that 2012 Vuelta a España Mountain Classification winner Simon Clarke has extended his contract with the team through to 2015. In addition to his fourth stage Vuelta win, Clarke has enjoyed a successful season with the team, finished on the podium in the Rogaland GP and taking stages at the Vuelta a Burgos and Tour of Norway with a second place in the general classification at the latter. Speaking about his decision to extend his contract with GreenEDGE the 26-year-old Australian commented, ‘Being Aussie in an Aussie team is a dream come true… I think I made a big step up this year, and in part, that’s because of the support I’ve received from this team. To have the chance to stay here for at least another three years is perfect for me.’

Clarke’s decision to extend would appear to be as much about his respect and fondness for his teammates as his management – saying, ‘The thing about Aussies is that we’re all really good at having fun. We work hard and we enjoy ourselves at the same time. The international guys have adopted that mentality. Most first year teams need a year to iron things out. We’ve hit the ground running. It’s been such a fun year.’

Tour of Britain Route Announced

The ninth edition of the modern Tour of Britain runs from Sunday 9 to Sunday 16 September 2012, and will cover 1,349 kilometres through England, Scotland and Wales.

The Grand Depart will take place in Ipswich, with Suffolk and Norfolk hosting the 199km opening stage of this year’s race on Sunday 9 September. From there The Tour will visit Nottingham, Knowsley and Merseyside, Scotland, the North West, Stoke-on-Trent, Wales and Devon before the challenging final stage in the Surrey Hills, finishing on Guildford’s uphill, cobbled High Street on Sunday September 16.

The organisers are expecting over 100 of the world’s best riders representing teams familiar from the Tour de France. From Spain, or more specifically the Basque Country, will be Euskaltel Euskadi, Garmin – Sharp from America, Liquigas – Cannondale from Italy and the Aussies from Orica GreenEDGE. Home interest will rest on Team Sky Pro Cycling who won the event in 2009, with Edvald Boasson Hagen, and grabbed a couple of stage wins in 2011 through Mark Cavendish. Other local interest might also be provided by Endura, Node4 Giordana and Team Raleigh GAC.

One interesting addition will be debutantes Team UK Youth. Owned by Nigel Mansell and ‘promoting the values of leading youth charity UK Youth’ the team seems to be a bit of a family affair with sons Greg riding and Leo acting as Managing Director. You can find out more at Team UK Youth.

The organisers hope the event will once again ‘…showcase Britain’s stunning scenery to a domestic and international audience with some of the world’s top cyclists competing on British roads for the right to win the Gold Jersey.’ This year the key sponsors include logistics firm Yodel and IG Markets.

You can keep up with the latest developments at the news section of the ToB website. You can find preview maps here. You’ll find descriptions on all of the stage routes available and highly detailed interactive stage maps.
