Back on Track for Schleck?

Signs are good that the fracture to the vertebra suffered during the Critérium du Dauphiné by Andy Schleck, ending his 2012 Tour de France ambitions, is improving. The RadioShack star has just returned from further clinical examinations and MRI scans in Basel, Switzerland and team Head Doctor Andreas Gösele has indicated that things are slowly moving in the right direction, commenting: ‘The MRI scan showed clear signs of a good healing, but the fracture is not fully healed yet. This makes us feel optimistic that with some minor modifications of his bike position, temporary of course, he can now look at being a pro cyclist again and train like his colleagues soon.’

Schleck meanwhile has been far from idol – ‘I have been doing quite a lot of alternative sports, mainly swimming. Basically everything I can do without pain was good. I didn’t want to believe that my season had come to full stop in that crash.’

Cancellara Cancels at TdF

Fabian Cancellara of RadioShack Nissan Trek has announced today that he will not start Stage 11 of the Tour de France, but instead drop from this year’s event and return home to Bern to be with his wife in the last stages of her pregnancy. The Swiss rider, who won both the Prologue and Stage 7 at this year’s TdF, said in a statement, ‘The decision to go back home is harder than you might expect… Up to now the team has had a very good Tour de France. We won a stage, had the yellow jersey for more than a week, we lead the Teams Classification and we have four riders in the top 20 of the GC. Most of all, we could show the cycling world that we are not just a group of nine strong individual riders, but a real team. The atmosphere within this group is amazing.  All of this makes it hard to abandon here. On the other hand, all of my team mates and directors understand and agree with my decision.’

All being well Cancellara will be back on the saddle to defend his title at the London Olympics in just a few week’s time.

Andy Schleck out of TdF

20120613-160535.jpgAndy Schleck has confirmed that he will not participate in this year’s Tour de France. The news first emerged earlier today (June 13) on a Luxembourg news website, but has now been confirmed by the RadioShack-Nissan star. Taking a sharp right in heavy rain 12km into the Time Trial stage at last week’s Critérium du Dauphiné he crashed heavily but initially put a brave face on things, commenting, ‘I’ve abandoned too many times this year already’. Eventually though he was forced to retire from competition and an MRI scan earlier this week revealed fractures vertebra, ending his TdF ambitions. Truly sad news for Schleck, but undeniably a boost to both Bradley Wiggins – who went on to win the Critérium du Dauphiné in spectacular fashion – and defending Tour Champion Cadel Evans.

Sick Schleck

The RadioShack-Nissan squad has today (Tuesday, February 6) announced that Andy Schleck has been forced to withdraw from Paris-Nice due to the development of gastroenteritis. Already reportedly unwell during yesterday’s Stage 2 – the 185.5 km, Mantes-la-Jolie to Orléans route – Schleck’s condition deteriorated with Team Director Alain Gallopin explaining, ‘He was able to finish the stage but that costed (sic) a lot of energy. This morning Andy felt better, but in the bus he got stomach problems and high temperature again. That’s why we decided not to let him take the start, while not being healthy.’

In a statement the Luxembourg star said, ‘I really wanted to try, but against sickness you cannot do a lot. I need to let my body recover from this. This is bad news, I wanted to perform well in Paris-Nice, but I better not jeopardize the rest of the season. My goals are situated later in the season.’ Could that be the Tour de France he’s talking about?

McEwen Wins Wallonie Picarde

Team RadioShack

Retaking the yellow jersey yesterday (Sunday, October 2) on the fourth stage of the Tour de Wallonie Picarde (formerly known as the Circuit Franco Belge)Team RadioShack’s Robbie McEwen secured himself overall victory. The 39-year-old rider readily admitted that the win had been unexpected but ultimately all went his way, commenting, “ This was a hard stage with seven climbs of the Col de la Croix de Jubaru. Despite the heat I felt good today and actually felt better and better as the stage went on…To be honest, this was an easy sprint for me.”

Although this has been a blistering year for the veteran rider – one that has included multiple stage wins as both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia – McEwen doesn’t consider it done and dusted: “Oh, yes, the season is not over yet. I hope I can show the same fast legs in Paris-Tours. That would be nice. I’ve never won that race.” The 105th running of the Paris-Tours takes place on October 9.

Horner Ends Season

American Chris Horner of RadioShack has announced that this year’s season has been forced to an end with the news that a blood clot has been found on his lung. Writing on his blog the 39 year-old said, “With a pulmonary embolism, the season quickly went from an exciting and positive one (for the most part), to an abrupt end.” Whilst not life-threatening the condition will necessitate a six-month course of treatment with blood-thinning drugs that should allow continued training but would make racing dangerous.

Horner, three-time USA Cycling National Racing Calendar Champion (2002-2004), famously had a particularly disastrous 2009 season during which he managed to break his left hand during the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain), his collarbone and a rib during the Tour of the Basque Country and his leg at the Giro d’Italia. On the positive side and with his trademark optimism, Horner added: “Looking ahead now, there’s a lot to be excited about since leaving the Tour de France, RadioShack has extended my contract for another two seasons, which gives me a lot of peace of mind and the ability to be completely focused on the next two years of great racing.”

One, Two for the Shack

Tony Martin of HTC-Highroad has won the final stage of the Tour of the Basque Country (the 24k Time Trial) to rack up his fifth win of the season; clocking a time of 32:15. He beat Andreas (RadioShack) into second place on + 0:05 but the Germany’s overall time of 22:12:11 was more than enough to give him a final General Classification win for the Tour. Klöden’s team mate Chris Horner took second overall place (+ 0:47), with Robert Gesink of Rabobank third.
