Fan Parks Welcome TdF to London

Tour de France Fan ParksWhilst tens of thousands lined the streets of London to witness the conclusion of the 155km Tour de France route from Cambridge – the final UK stage before the race’s return to France – thousands more packed the three Tour de France Fan Parks. The Fan Parks, in Trafalgar Square, Canary Wharf and Green Park, offered not only big screen action throughout the day, but a host of other cycling-related distractions too. Foodies Festivals kept everyone topped up on food, special guests gave talks and, on the Sunday night despite heavy rain, plenty of onlookers braved the elements to watch a special screening of Rising from Ashes an extraordinary documentary on the first Rwandan National Cycling team and their six year journey to the London Olympics.

The Tour de France Fan Parks were sponsored and supported by, amongst others, Nuffield Health, Skoda and European rail experts Voyages-sncf.com

Cavendish to Miss Commonwealth Games

imageIt has been confirmed that Mark Cavendish will now miss the Commonwealth Games, set to begin in Glasgow on July 23, as a result of the injuries sustained in the closing minutes of the first stage of the Tour de France. The Omega Pharma – Quick-Step rider suffered a dislocated shoulder and damaged ligaments falling heavily in the sprint finish on Saturday and his rehabilitation following surgery is expected to take at least six weeks. Cavendish comments: ‘…at the moment all I can do is focus 100% of my effort on my recovery, to be able to get back racing as quickly as possible.’ In an oblique reference to the fact that Cavendish also caused him to crash, Orica-GreenEDGE’s Simon Gerrans Tweeted yesterday, ‘Well I certainly had some ups and downs the past 3 days racing in the UK, but it was an awesome experience all the same. #TDF’

Whilst Gerrans may have put the incident behind him, having accepted Cavendish’s apology, it’s potentially not the end of the matter with Norway’s Alexander Kristoff making his own views clear that it was a case of ‘crashing on purpose.’ Cavendish’s agent Simon Bayliff has suggested that they are considering legal action against the Team Katusha rider.

Cavendish out of Tour

imageOmega Pharma – Quick-Step has confirmed that Mark Cavendish will not continue with this year’s Tour de France due to injuries suffered just metres from the finish line in Harrogate at the end of Stage 1. Despite initial fears of a fractured collarbone an x-ray at Harrogate District hospital showed no bones broken, but a subsequent MRI scan revealed an AC-joint dislocation and ruptured ligaments. However, having assessed his condition overnight, the team have announced that he is in no condition to continue.

Speaking after the crash in Yorkshire Cavendish commented: ‘I’m gutted about the crash today. It was my fault. I’ll personally apologise to Simon Gerrans as soon as I get the chance. In reality, I tried to find a gap that wasn’t really there. I wanted to win today, I felt really strong and in a great position to contest the sprint thanks to the unbelievable efforts of my team. Sorry to all the fans that came out to support; it was truly incredible.’

The loss of Cavendish from the OPQS team leaves them somewhat floundering this early on in the TdF; it also leaves just three British riders – Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Simon Yates – in the Tour.

Giant-Shimano’s Marcel Kittel was the winner of Stage 1. The tour continues today with 201km York to Sheffield.

Daryl Impey Tests Positive for Probenecid

daryl_impeyORICA GreenEDGE rider Daryl Impey, who last year became the first South African to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey, has confirmed that he has failed a drugs test. The 29-year-old said on his personal website that he had been notified by William Newman, the President of Cycling South Africa, on June 23 that he had tested positive for the banned substance Probenecid at the South African championships held back in February. Probenecid, a diuretic, is considered a masking agent, used to hide the presence of other performance enhancing drugs.

Impey said in his statement: ‘I had no knowledge of Probenecid nor have I ever taken the substance knowingly in any manner.  I am committed to drug-free sport and fully intend to take all steps necessary to clear myself of any suspicion. The notification came as a complete shock to me just days before the start of the Tour de France, particularly since anti-doping tests conducted on me on 8 and 9 February 2014 yielded no adverse results. I immediately flew back to South Africa and was present at the analysis of my B sample on 27 June 2014, the results of which confirmed the initial analysis.’

An announcement from ORICA-GreenEDGE in relation to Impey’s situation reads: ‘The team would like to underline that it respects Daryl Impey’s right to prove his full innocence and will not comment any further until the process has run its due course and final conclusion has been made. As per the team’s code of conduct, Daryl Impey will not feature on the team’s roster until the case has been closed and he is fully eligible to ride.’

BICYCLE World Premier

bicycle_documentaryBICYCLE, a new 90-minute documentary on the reemergence of the humble bike, will have its public world premiere at the Yorkshire Festival Of Cycling on Friday July 4 ahead of the ceremonial start of the Tour de France with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry in attendance. Directed by two-time BAFTA winning Michael B Clifford, the screening will take place on a huge outdoor screen powered, of course, by 12 cyclists. Clifford, himself a keen cyclist, made the film to explore the question: ‘why is cycling and the bicycle back in fashion?’

BICYCLEtells the story of cycling in the land that invented the modern bicycle, its birth, decline and re-birth – from Victorian origins to today. The documentary explores bicycle design, sport and transport through the retelling of iconic stories and features interviews with notable contributors including Sir Dave Brailsford, Gary Fisher, Chris Boardman, Ned Boulting, Sir Chris Hoy, Tracy Moseley, Mike Burrows.

BICYCLEwill be on limited cinema release throughout the summer and autumn and will be available on DVD in September.
