Kiryienka Signs to Sky

Vasil Kiryienka signs to Team SkyTeam Sky have announced the signing of Movistar’s Vasil Kiryienka on a three-year contract. A pro since 2007 Kiryienka comes with a solid reputation for both hard work and versatility, showing strength as a climber and no slouch when it comes to the time trials. This year saw the 31-year-old Belarusian hit his ninth Grand Tour appearance (at the Tour de France) before going on to take bronze at the World Time Trial Championships in Limburg.

Team Sky’s Sports Director Nicolas Portal commented on the signing: ‘Vasil has won some big races and put in some impressive performances at the very highest level. His stage win at the Giro d’Italia last season was phenomenal, and we were all impressed with the way he was able to battle on and take the victory… He can perform very highly in his own right, or in a team capacity, and we know what he is capable of. It puts us in even better shape heading into the big tours of 2013.’

Froome to Lead Team Sky on Tour?

Chris Froome to lead Team Sky at Tour de France 2013After much speculation as to how Team Sky will play the big races of 2013 we seem to be a step closer to knowing with Sky boss Dave Brailsford commenting, ‘It does look as though the plan going into next year… is that the Tour of Italy would be a very good target for Bradley and leave Froomey then to focus on the Tour de France.’ Brailsford, speaking to reporters at UK Sport’s World Class Performance conference in Leeds, said: ‘We are just getting back into training now and need to do quite a lot of planning.’

Chirs Froome of course looked strong (arguably in contention for an overall win despite team instructions) at this year’s TdF and the idea of unleashing him unfettered on the 2013 Tour as every bit as exciting as the prospect of Wiggins adding a Giro title to his impressive roster. The Giro takes place May 4 – 26, whilst the TdF (the 100th edition, with a course likely to favour climbers like Froome) runs June 29 – July 21.

Timmy Duggan Finds Eleventh Hour Home

Saxo Bank-Tinkoff new signingsThe shape of the 2012 season – or at least the shape of teams – is continuing to make itself known with the news that Saxo Bank-Tinkoff has signed new deals with American Timmy Duggan and Russian Evgeny Petrov. 30-year-old Duggan, winner of this year’s US National Road Race Championships, has signed a one-year deal after unexpectedly becoming available when his plans to join SpiderTech fell apart due to the Canadian team’s decision to suspend racing across 2013. Giro d’Italia stage winner Petrov joins on a two-year contract, leaving behind Astana.

Of his signing, Duggan says: ‘I am thrilled to join Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank. After my previous team turned out the lights, I was left scrambling for a job, but luckily Bjarne (Riis, Team Owner) saw a good opportunity in me and felt that I would be a good fit for the team. So I am thrilled to make a late signing into a fantastic situation.’

Back in the UK and Team Sky have unveiled their latest member with Shaun Stephens coming on board as Performance Coach. The 37-year-old Australian comes from a predominantly triathlon background and joins Sky from his role as Head Coach and Programme Manager at the Australian Institute of Sport and Triathlon to work fulltime alongside Head of Performance Tim Kerrison. Commenting on Stephens’ less than conventional background, Team Principle Dave Brailsford said, ‘Shaun’s appointment continues Team Sky’s commitment to assembling the very best coaching and support staff in the world, without being afraid to look beyond the arena of cycling…’

At around 6pm yesterday evening (November 7) a white Vauxhall Astra car being driven by a local woman pulled out of a petrol station in Wrightington, Lancashire, hitting the 32-year-old Olympic medalist and throwing him from the bike. His condition is stable.’

A statement on Wiggin’s Team Sky website reads: ‘We can confirm that Bradley Wiggins was involved in a road traffic accident whilst riding his bike near his home in Lancashire on Wednesday evening… He is being kept in hospital overnight for observation but the injuries he has sustained are not thought to be serious and he is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.’

Wiggins Gains a Podium Place

Bradley Wiggins, Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, UCIDespite the International Cycling Union declaring that no substitute winners of the Tour de France would stand in place of the now-deposed Lance Armstrong for the consecutive years 1999-2005, they have now announced that results from his comeback season (2009/10) will be reallocated; the upshot for Team Sky’s Bradley Wiggins is that his fourth place 2009 Tour de France place is upgraded to a podium third place. The UCI confirmed: ‘In 2009 the placing of Mr Armstrong will be reallocated… Bradley Wiggins is the third-placed rider for the Tour de France, 2009.’

This will make for happier news for Sky who have had a fairly torrid couple of weeks with the departure, after their announcement of a zero-tolerance stance on historical drug use, of both Race Coach, Bobby Julich and Sporting Director Steven de Jongh. The team’s lead Sports Director, Sean Yates, has also departed although this is understood to have nothing to do with any previous (or indeed current) wrongdoing, but rather for ‘…purely personal reasons.’

Sean Yates Quits Team Sky

20121028-170221.jpgTeam Sky’s lead Sports Director, Sean Yates has announced he is quitting the team and retiring from cycling after three decades in the sport. Yates was himself a pro cyclist, the British individual pursuit champion in 1982 and 1983 and a stage winner at both the Tour de France and Vuelta a España in 1988, before retiring in 1996 to follow a management career in the sport. He joined Team Sky at their inception and is largely credited with masterminding Bradley Wiggins win at this year’s TdF.

In a statement Team Principal Dave Brailsford said: ‘After a long career in professional cycling, he has told us that he wants to move on, for purely personal reasons… Sean has been a great support to the riders on the road and a valuable colleague to us all. We wish him the best for the next step in his life.’

The news of his departure comes immediately on the back of Team Sky’s Race Coach, Bobby Julich, leaving the outfit after disclosing that he used a banned substance whilst a pro cyclist during the late 1990s. However Sky are at pains to point out that, although he was interviewed – along with all staff – about any historic misdemeanours there were ‘…no admissions or disclosures that would have required him to leave the team,’ and his exit is, ‘for purely personal reasons.’
