Sky Announce Giro d’Italia Squad

Giro d'ItaliaTeam Sky have announced that Richie Porte will lead Team Sky for the first Grand Tour of the year, the 2015 Giro d’Italia. Porte, who has already won Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and Giro del Trentino this season, will lead the nine-man team which features Italian riders Salvatore Puccio and sprinter Elia Viviani, alongside Bernhard Eisel, Sebastián Henao, Vasil Kiryienka, Leopold König, Mikel Nieve and Kanstantsin Siutsou.

On confirming the team line-up for the Giro d’Italia Team Principal, Sir Dave Brailsford, said: ‘Team Sky has had a great start to the year and we are going into the first Grand Tour of the season with a strong team, led by Richie… Richie is entering the race in good shape and with real focus and determination. He’s made a lot of small changes across a number of areas in his preparation and training this season after the illness that affected his performance in 2014. His results this season speak for themselves with excellent wins at Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and Giro del Trentino. This is one of the biggest and toughest races to win in the calendar but we go to the Giro confident about the challenge ahead.’

Porte adds: ‘The Giro d’Italia has been my main goal of the season. I’ve worked very hard through the winter and am entering the race strong, healthy and up for the challenge. The competition will be tough, and obviously anything can happen in a Grand Tour, but we’ve got a great group of riders going into the race and we are ready for it.’

The 98th edition of Giro d’Italia starts on Saturday May 9 with a TTT in San Lorenzo al Mare and concludes on Sunday May 31 in Milan.

Dowsett Sets Hour Record

dowsett_hour_recordGB’s Alex Dowsett has broken the UCI Hour Record, reaching 52.937km as the hour mark passed. The Movistar rider finally got his attempt underway, after postponement due to injury, at the Manchester Velodrome. The move to the ‘fast’ National Cycling Centre’s track paid off, as Dowsett completed over 211 laps inside the time limit.

The 26-year-old Commonwealth Time Trial champion became the fourth person to break the record in the last eight months and beat current holder Rohan Dennis’s mark by over 400 metres.

Dowsett, sat behind Dennis’s record schedule for most of the ride and was nine seconds down at one point, subsequently revealed that his plan was to be riding in deficit and have ‘enough in the tank’ for the final ten minutes. While Dennis faded towards the end of his record run, Dowsett continued his charge to the end.

Dowsett said immediately after his ride, ‘I was expecting it to be horrific, but it was just terrible.’ He has already confirmed that he may make another attempt at the record sometime after June 7, the date pencilled in for a Bradley Wiggins shot at what is becoming an essential gong for the world’s top cyclists.

Tour de Yorkshire Begins

Tour de YorkshireThe Tour de Yorkshire gets underway today with the 174km leg from Bridlington to Scarborough. The event, staged largely due to the success of last year’s Tour de France Grand Depart, sees 18 teams of eight riders slug it out, but despite the presence of the likes of Team Sky and JLT Condor it’s Bradley Wiggin’s self-styled Team Wiggins that’s likely to be the biggest draw.

The team, which made their race debut at the Tour de Normandie in March, looks strong with Wiggins at the forefront although the former TdF winner is typically self-effacing commenting: ‘I’m perhaps not the Bradley Wiggins of 2012. I’m 10 kilos heavier with a doppy beard…’

Today’s opener is followed on Saturday and Sunday with Stage two – Selby to York, 174km and Stage three – Wakefield to Leeds, 167km.

Elinor Barker Interview

elinor barkerTo call Elinor Barker an up and coming star would be to downplay her already impressive cycling CV. The 20-year old Welsh cyclist took silver in the junior women’s time-trial at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships, going on to take gold the following year in the same event making her a world champion.

In her debut elite UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk in 2013, she again won gold alongside Dani King and Laura Trott and in the same year at the UEC European Track Championships bagged another gold in team pursuit (with Laura Trott, Dani King and Katie Archibald) setting a new world record into the bargain.

She has gone on to break that record twice more, become world champion again in the team pursuit (2014 UCI Track Cycling World Championships), and take further podiums at the Commonwealth Games, European Track Championships and UCI Track World Championships… Did we mention she’s still only 20?

With a move for 2015 from Wiggle-Honda to Matrix Pro Cycling, Cyclo caught up with Elinor to talk about the new team and the year ahead…

Cyclo: A big move from Wiggle Honda – presumably never an easy decision but was there one deciding factor?

Elinor Barker: Not really, it was a combination of a lot of things but I really liked how professional and organised Matrix are.

Cyclo: Was the ‘British’ aspect of Matrix an appeal?

Elinor Barker: Definitely. I’ve always enjoyed racing for British Teams and I didn’t want to change that in 2015.

Cyclo: One of the key Matrix principles is the ‘Development of women’s racing at all levels.’ That has to be high on the agenda for you, yes?

Elinor Barker: Definitely! The work that has been done to develop women’s racing over the last few years has been incredible- resulting in huge races such as the Friends Life Women’s Tour and the Santos Tour Down Under that just weren’t on the calendar before. I’m really happy to be a part of that by joining Matrix.

Cyclo: There seems to be more of a gender balance in TV coverage for track. Do you see a shift now towards more women’s road coverage too?

Elinor Barker: Yes it’s going that way. UK coverage is getting better every year and again the interest in the new, bigger races such as the Women’s Tour has helped that massively.

Cyclo: How’s the balance between road and track? The team aspects of track must feed into the dynamic of a road team (and vice versa)…

Elinor Barker: Yes I think so. On the track it’s pretty rare that I’m training or racing as an individual and I think that’s a pretty good aspect to bring to the road.

Cyclo: I’m sure there’s an obvious answer (or two) here, but what was your highlight of 2014?

Elinor Barker: Track worlds in Columbia and Commonwealth games in Glasgow. It was a pretty good year!

Cyclo: And the big goals for 2015?

Elinor Barker: The Track World Championships in Paris and defend the Team Pursuit title and to ride the women’s Tour and have a good, fun year on the road.

Cyclo: Rio must seem suddenly very close… your thoughts?

Elinor Barker: Scarily close! It’s exciting though.

Cyclo: What’s the training regime like and is there any such thing as ‘down time’ for you?

Elinor Barker: It’s pretty tough but recovery is just as important- lots of feet up time after training.

Cyclo: How’s your approach to nutrition? Do you allow yourself treats and indulgencies?

Elinor Barker: I think nutrition is really important and I eat right so that I can train and recover properly. But at the same time if I really want a treat I know I can burn it off in training!

Cyclo: The team has recently started working with USN – what products do you use and how are you finding it?

Elinor Barker: I really like the recovery shakes as they basically taste like milkshake, which is much easier to drink that most protein drinks.

Cyclo: What was your first bike? (Sorry we ask everyone this in the hope they say Raleigh Chopper – but you’re far too young…)

Elinor Barker: I can’t remember what bike it was but it was a little red one with flames on it that I called my rocket bike. It had been my older brother and sister’s first bikes, and my uncle’s first bike when he was a kid.

Cyclo: Finally, any key advice to those looking to make a career on two wheels?

Elinor Barker: Try out all the disciplines that you can – track, cyclo X, road etc. I never thought I would enjoy track before I tried it, never mind be a full time track rider as a career! It’s important to find out what you enjoy and what you’re good at, you might surprise yourself.

Peloton Jersey

Peloton JerseyWe love it when people take matters into their own hands and that’s exactly what the founders of Peloton did when they couldn’t find anything on the market that fitted their desired cycling jersey criteria of ‘practical and classically stylish.’

Creating their own range – currently with four colour-way designs for men and one for women – using 100% BioActive Polyester Coolmax fabric, which works hard at wicking away the sweat of the ride, the results are highly pleasing.

The fit is slim and snug but the fabric moves freely and doesn’t restrict movement in the least, and the flat-lock seams add to the overall comfort. The high collar is an unusual design feature, more at home on a casual tee but actually, it could be argued, adding to protection from the sun and certainly helping with the general aesthetics that set this range apart from the pack.

The zip runs full length, so plenty of bare-chested (for the men?) opportunities if the weather really demands but if we were being picky a ‘zipper garage’ at the top would really improve comfort, especially as these jerseys zip all the way to the top of the tall collar and there’s a tendency to feel it dig in here. Cuffs and waist are elasticated, with the latter featuring rubberised hem to stop the jersey from sliding up.

The standout feature for us – beyond the rather natty design/colours – is the pocket configuration at the back. There are two really generous volume mesh pockets for gels, bars and the like, plus a further two large zipped pockets sitting over the back of those for keys, phones and other valuables. It’s a lot of storage and we were pleased to find that, even when packed to the max, the Peloton jersey remained exceptionally comfortable.

Despite the zip quality not being quite there yet, Peloton have done a really credible job of bringing to market a product that combines style with substance.

The Peloton jerseys retail at £64.99 just about the mark we would expect for the more bespoke look and feel of apparel of this quality. Further details and online purchase at pelotoncycleclothing.co.uk

CEP Extend Range

CEP CompressionCEP has announced that both new products and colour ranges are being added to their signature compression collection including the CEP Ultralight socks and calf sleeves, and the CEP No Show socks. The news comes following record sales of CEP products at the Virgin Money London Marathon.

The Ultralight socks and calf sleeves are designed for athletes seeking ‘marginal gains and ultimate performance’ and are made using a material that is 25% lighter and more breathable than other items in the range, whilst the No Show socks sit snugly just below the trainer line and feature extra-flat toe seams and additional heel padding. In terms of new colours, which feature across their calf sleeves, short socks and run socks, CEP are adding Hawaii blue, purple blue, and black – mixed with green for men and with pink for women.

Commenting on the new lines Matt Davey, Brand Manager of CEP UK and Ireland says: ‘This is an incredibly exciting year for CEP, and these new product developments are simply the start of a jam-packed season for us. We look forward to sharing more with everyone in the next few months, as the brand continues to go from strength to strength.’

Astana Cleared to Race

astana_newsAstana have been cleared to race by the UCI despite president Brian Cookson requesting a withdrawal of the team’s WorldTour licence – the independent UCI Licence Commission has decided to allow them to continue racing.

Astana was granted a provisional WordTour licence in December and subjected to an independent audit. The Commission is now said to be satisfied that a ‘reorganisation of all the support personnel of its riders in order to strengthen its fight against doping” meets it’s requirements. The Kazah team will keep its existing registration as long as it complies with “special measures.’

However, the results of the audit, carried out by the Sport Sciences Institute of the University of Lausanne (ISSUL), raised some red flags, including a continued relationship with banned trainer Michele Ferrari.

Cookson’s original position that ‘Teams have to take their responsibilities very, very seriously in terms of how they monitor riders, how they support riders and coach riders’ included a nod to the Ferrari rumours reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, ‘Others who are allegedly floating around on the sidelines, the people who have been banned, there are rumours that they are still acting as intermediaries, it is a warning to them as well.’

The trigger for the original enquiry was a pair of WorldTour team riders testing positive for EPO and several doping cases in its Continental affiliate. Both events raised concerns about the team’s overall structure and ethics.

Cookson said, in conclusion, that the situation was ‘very frustrating, but we had to work with legal tools and I had to accept that.’ The announcement finally clears the way for Vincenzo Nibali to defend his 2014 Tour de France title without fear of exclusion.

New Forest Rattler – August 16, 2015

New Forest RattlerOffering 47, 82 and 102mile routes the New Forest Rattler delivers some great cycling and some spectacular scenery. There are sections with long open straights that are truly exhilarating, some punchy hills, and also some longer gradual climbs. The maximum gradient is at Blissford hill near the end of each route where you will encounter a 25% climb. This is a short sharp climb that looks like a wall as you approach it.

The routes have been designed to encounter as little traffic as possible, and there are minimal miles on bigger roads. In places the routes narrow to single lanes and extra care will need to be taken on these sections. Riders will also need to be extremely careful when passing any of the livestock that reside in this wonderful part of the country. Horses in particular tend to get easily spooked by passing cyclists, so please take care while enjoying what has become a favourite fixture in many people’s cycling calendar.

The 102mile epic route offers the more experienced sportive rider a fantastic challenge, and completely showcases the fantastic New Forest National Park. Be warned though – the last 20 miles of the epic route are the hilliest…

Entry fees are £27 for the 47miler and £30 for both longer routes. Full details of the New Forest Rattler at cyclofanatic.co.uk
