The Brute of Britain

Yodel, the parcel delivery provider, has announced that it will renew this year as the official logistics partner and sprints sponsor of the Tour of Britain, which is set for the off on September 9 on the streets of Ipswich – the first time the city has played host to the event. The eight-stage race, the UK’s biggest pro cycle outing and largest free-to-watch sporting event of 2012, has been described by Race Director Mick Bennett as ‘certainly our toughest yet’ and despite the lack of London finish (due to the ‘strain’ on the Capital of the Olympics and Paralympics) looks certain to involve some truly challenging competition. Not only will teams battle the notorious British weather – which last year saw the curtailment of the Blackpool promenade stretch – but hilly brutes involving the Pennines, Cannock Chase, the Brecon Beacons and the Caerphilly mountain climb will test the toughest legs.

If all that wasn’t enough the final day’s racing (September 16) will involve an uphill sprint along the cobbled high street of Guildford in Surrey; no wonder Bennett has described this as ‘…a race of two halves.’ Thus far Liquigas-Cannondale, Vacansoleil-DCM, Team Sky, Garmin-Barracuda and GreenEdge have all confirmed their attendance.

Double Volta Win for GreenEdge

You would be forgiven for thinking that GreenEdge had been around since the dawn of cycling given their continued and seemingly increasing dominance across the board. Yesterday (March 20) saw the Australian outfit’s Michael Albasini make it two stage wins for two at the Volta a Catalunya, taking a sprint finish at the tail end of the 161km Girona route to beat  Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s Dario Cataldo into second and Team Sky’s Rigoberto Uran into third.

The third stage of the Volta (which concludes on March 25) continues today with the longest leg, 210.9km, La Vall d’en Bas (Sant Esteve d’en Bas) to Port-Ainé.

GreenEDGE Stunning Debut

Something of an Australian celebration is (probably still) going on ‘where the women glow and the men plunder’, with the UCI World Tour curtain raiser, the Santos Tour Down Under seeing a fairytale winner in the shape of local lad Simon Gerrans. The win was made all the more party worthy by the fact that his GreenEDGE Australian professional cycling team are a fledgling operation (Australia’s first pro outfit) taking their debut ride. Gerrans though is no stranger to success having previously won the Santos Tour Down Under in 2006 whilst riding for Ag2r Prevoyance; he wore the Ochre Leader’s Jersey in Stage 6 this year and, with the support of his GreenEdge team mates, did more than enough to be crowned the 2012 champion.

The final jersey winners for the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under were:

Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey – Simon Gerrans (GreenEDGE)

Jayco Sprint Jersey – Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Procycling)

SKODA King of the Mountain – Rohan Dennis (UniSA – Australia)

Cycle Instead Young Rider – Rohan Dennis (UniSA – Australia)

Hindmarsh Most Aggressive Rider – Jan Bakelants (RadioShack-Nissan)

Brilliant Blend Team – RadioShack-Nissan

An all Oz-squad for GreenEDGE

Commenting on the decision Race Director Mike Turtur has said, ‘GreenEDGE has selected a high quality team to make its debut at our race, which is fantastic. We expect the riders will do very well competitively and be a team that the fans will embrace.’ adding that the inclusion of the GreenEDGE squad marked a milestone in Australian cycling. The reigning Santos Tour Down Under winner and Australian National Time Trial Champion, Cameron Meyer, will headlines the seven-rider squad.

Speaking of his pride and their chances of success, GreenEDGE General Manager Shayne Bannan said, ‘We’re obviously really proud to have such a great line-up for our first race on the WorldTour. Having our debut in Australia is exciting. It’s a race that has gone from strength to strength over the last years. We are trying to honour that by bringing a really competitive roster. It will be a hard race, but we have a good chance to put GreenEDGE on the map in our first big, international competition.’

Led by Team Manager, Matt White (AUS) and the squad will comprise: Cameron Meyer, Matt Goss, Stuart O’Grady, Simon Gerrans, Jack Bobridge, Leigh Howard and Robbie McEwen.

GreenEDGE Shapes Up

GreenEDGE are continuing their surge to become Australian’s first World Tour team, and with the signing of Stuart O’Grady (over from Leopard-Trek) for the 2012 season and the defection of Travis Meyer, Cameron Meyer and Jack Bobridge (all from Garmin-Cervélo) and the addition of Pieter Weening from Rabobank – the ambition now looks one step closer. O’Grady, the only Australian to have won the Paris-Roubaix classic and a leading team member at Leopard-Trek where he takes the role of “road captain” (the rider who helps decide and coordinate tactics on the fly mid-race), has stated that the chance to ride for “home squad” was one that he couldn’t turn down.

Although Tour de France champion Cadel Evans is thought likely to see out the remainder of his career at BMC he is a long time friend of GreenEDGE mastermind Shayne Bannan and attended a team function in Italy this May – speaking of O’Grady’s move, Evans commented “I was really pleased to see that news, about Stuey going to GreenEDGE… When he (Bannan) does something, he does it properly and he doesn’t lose perspective, he doesn’t lose vision.” Evan’s has also vowed to help out his old friend in any way possible, though jokingly admits that should Bannan end up signing the likes of Contador or the Schleck Brothers to his fledgling team he will, “…help a little less.”
